Portable appliance testing (PAT)

The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, employees and the self-employed to take reasonably practicable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of portable electrical appliances. This includes appliances used by employees, the public (such as schools and hotels), and where appliances are hired, repaired or serviced.

To comply with the Regulations, you will need to put in place a regular programme of maintenance, inspection and testing, and portable appliance testing (PAT testing) as an essential part of your health and safety policy. The level of inspection and testing depends on the type of appliance, and how and where it is used.
